A simple guide for service businesses with no storefront.
Follow each step exactly.
Without a verified Google Business Profile, your business is invisible on Google Maps. That means homeowners searching “painter near me” will never find you. This is the single most important thing you can do for your business right now.
Do all of this BEFORE you open the camera. Preparation is 80% of success.
Go to Vistaprint or any local sign shop. Get 2 magnetic signs with your business name, phone number, and logo. Stick them on both sides of your work vehicle. This is the #1 reason videos get approved. Cost: about $30.
If you already have a full vehicle wrap, you are good to go.
Print out and have these ready on your desk or table:
Put on a Puzzle Painting shirt, jacket, or hat with your logo on it. If you do not have one, a clean work shirt is fine - but branded clothing helps a lot.
At your desk or kitchen table, open your laptop or computer and have one of these visible on screen:
Print your Puzzle Painting logo on a sheet of paper and tape it to the wall behind your desk. This sounds simple but it helps Google see your business name in your workspace.
Put your painting equipment in your vehicle so it is visible when you open the doors:
Google will REJECT your video if other people's faces are visible. Film when nobody else is around. If someone walks by, start over.
Make sure your phone has:
Natural daylight makes the video clearer. Film between 10am and 3pm if possible. Do not film in the dark or in heavy rain.
You must record through the Google Maps app. You cannot upload a pre-recorded video.
Open Google Maps on your phone
Search for 'Puzzle Painting' - find your business listing
Tap "Get verified" or "Verify now"
Select "Video" as your verification method
Tap "Start Recording" - the camera opens
Follow the filming script below (60-90 seconds total)
Tap "Stop Recording" when done
Tap "Upload Video" then confirm with "Done"
Important: The video must be ONE continuous take. No stopping. No pausing. No editing. If you make a mistake, stop the recording and start completely over.
Follow this exact sequence. Practice it once before you hit record. The whole video should be 60-90 seconds.
Say:
"Hi, I am Daniel Farahani, owner of Puzzle Painting. This is our home office."
Show:
Say:
"This is our service vehicle."
Show:
Say:
"And this is where I manage the business."
Show:
Say:
"Here is our business registration and HST number."
Show:
That is it. Tap “Stop Recording” and upload. Do NOT delete the video from your phone until Google confirms verification (up to 5 business days).
Showing other people's faces in the video
Filming inside only - you MUST start outside showing the street and address
Using a plain white van with no business name on it
Showing an address that does not match your Google listing
Editing or cutting the video - it must be one continuous shot
Not unlocking the vehicle or front door on camera (proves you are the owner)
Documents where the business name is spelled differently than your Google listing
Filming at night or in poor lighting
Not showing any painting equipment or tools
Making changes to your Google listing while verification is pending
Do not panic. About half of all video verifications get rejected the first time. Here is what to do:
Check the rejection reason. Google now tells you specifically what failed. Look for "Review issues" on your profile.
Fix ONLY the thing they flagged. If they said 'business name not visible' - make your magnetic signs bigger or hold the camera on them longer.
Wait for the review period to end (up to 5 business days) before resubmitting.
Re-film with the fix. Do NOT submit the same video.
If rejected 3 times, request a LIVE video call with Google Support.
Live video calls have a much higher approval rate because you can respond to their questions in real time.
